A few years ago, I started working with repurposed wood as a canvas. I picked images that would compliment the wood. Animals like donkeys, horses, dogs and cats, then sheep and goats. I then saw some incredible tribal images and just had to try it on the wood. I really liked what happened… the results were beautiful. I decided to try pet portraits and that was really fun. It was a sweet rustic canvas for fur babies. I did dogs, cats and horse stall markers. It was made sweeter because some of the animals had passed and it was a loving reminder for the parents.
A few months ago I got inspired to do some wacky stuff. I see things in my head before I create them and I make up stories about the art as I’m doing it. Thus came the birth of Nonsense Art. The first to evolve were potheads. I had a stash of little pots and thought, what if animals were in the pots working their way out. So that’s what I did. Using paper clay, I got to sculpt a few faves. There was a cat and a bunny and then an alien and a pink elephant. Each had a story to go with it, but some had sweet messages layered on their pots.
From there I started making flying potheads. These were little guys who fly around during the day and night and inspire with thoughts of kindness or just entertain. Most of them are masked so you don’t recognize them.
Then I started working with mini pots and created tiny little cats and dogs sitting in their baby pots. I have to admit, although they take lots of time, they are very fun.
Finally I reintroduced “Box People”. Paper clay sculptures that tell something significant about the way I see some things in life. They live in a box and the story is written on the outside. Right now I have The Invisible Woman and The Recluse.
I hope you enjoy these little guys. I hope they bring a smile to your face.
